The scientific community’s assessment of the environmental risks of fracking are insufficient to justify a total ban. But under legislation authored by state Sen. Fran Pavley, whose environmental credentials are beyond question, a statewide environmental impact review of fracking is underway and due for completion in 2015. If the evidence warrants a ban, Pavley says she will fight for one. In the meantime, her SB 4, signed into law last year, is the toughest fracking regulation in the nation. It requires full disclosure of chemicals used, notification of affected property owners and groundwater testing before and after the procedure.
